The rules, plainly

What the regulator allows, how it stacks with net metering, and what to expect at tax time.

Net metering

Full retail net metering is available from the major utilities. Unsold blocks are credited at retail, which sets a high fallback.

Tax

State and federal income reporting apply. The year-end statement covers both.

Regulator

The Colorado Public Utilities Commission regulates investor-owned utilities. Co-ops set their own export terms.

Colorado’s retail net metering means your fallback rate is already good, so the market matters most during peaks and for sellers outside the big utilities’ territories, where export credits are lower.

What to know

  • Rural co-op customers often have poor export rates and see the biggest gains.
  • Snow-season output is low, but wind sellers on the Front Range do well in winter.
  • Denver is live, with Boulder and Fort Collins opening next.
