The rules, plainly
What the regulator allows, how it stacks with net metering, and what to expect at tax time.
Net metering
The Value of Distributed Energy Resources (VDER) tariff credits exports by time and location. Unsold blocks are credited under VDER.
Tax
State and federal income reporting apply. The year-end statement covers both.
Regulator
The New York Public Service Commission sets export rules. Peer sales run under the existing interconnection.
New York has the highest sell prices on the board. Dense demand, high retail rates and a large share of neighbour buyers mean small systems earn more here than anywhere.
What to know
- Roof space is limited, so batteries and EVs do most of the selling. A 10 kWh battery in Brooklyn earns about what a 7 kW roof earns elsewhere.
- Neighbour buyers pay a premium because retail rates are so high.
- Winter evenings are a second peak, not just summer afternoons.
Cities
Brooklyn is live. Queens, Westchester and Long Island are on the waitlist.
