The rules, plainly

What the regulator allows, how it stacks with net metering, and what to expect at tax time.

Net metering

Texas has no statewide net metering. Your retail provider sets a buyback rate, often well below retail. Unsold blocks fall back to that rate.

Tax

No state income tax. Federal reporting only, with a year-end statement from us.

Regulator

ERCOT runs the wholesale market and the PUCT regulates it. Home sellers trade on the local grid through their existing interconnection.

Texas is a deregulated market, which makes it a natural fit. Prices swing hard in the summer, and sellers with a battery or an EV catch the afternoon spikes.

What is different in Texas

  • There is no net metering, so your fallback rate depends on your retail provider. Many pay very little, which makes the floor especially valuable.
  • Summer demand peaks can push block prices well past $0.30 for short periods.
  • Winter storms create short bursts of extremely high prices for anyone with stored power.

Cities

Austin is live. Houston, Dallas and San Antonio open this year.
